From desktop starter to walk-in cabinet — protecting your investment
A cigar is only as good as the conditions in which it is stored. Whether you own five cigars or five hundred, understanding humidity and temperature is essential.
The humidor is the most important piece of equipment a cigar aficionado can own. Without proper storage, even the finest cigars will dry out, crack, and lose the complex flavors that make them worth smoking in the first place.
The Fundamentals
Cigars should be stored at 65-72% relative humidity and 65-70°F (18-21°C). These conditions mimic the tropical environments where tobacco is grown and aged.
Choosing Your Humidor
For beginners, a quality desktop humidor holding 25-50 cigars is the ideal starting point. Look for Spanish cedar lining — this wood is the industry standard for a reason. It absorbs and releases moisture evenly, repels tobacco beetles, and imparts a subtle cedar character to your cigars over time.
Seasoning Your Humidor
Before placing any cigars inside, you must season your humidor. This involves gradually raising the humidity of the cedar lining to prevent it from drawing moisture away from your cigars. The process takes 5-7 days and should never be rushed.
Digital vs. Analog Hygrometers
Invest in a quality digital hygrometer. Analog hygrometers are notoriously inaccurate and should be calibrated or replaced. A Boveda calibration kit is an inexpensive and reliable way to verify your hygrometer's accuracy.
A quality humidor is the single most important investment a cigar aficionado can make. Without proper storage, even the finest cigars will deteriorate. Start with a Spanish cedar-lined desktop humidor and Boveda packs — you cannot go wrong.
Season your humidor for a full 7 days before adding any cigars. Rushing this process is the most common mistake beginners make, and it can ruin your entire collection.
For a first humidor, budget $75–$150 for a quality desktop model. Avoid cheap humidors with foam humidifiers — they are unreliable and can damage your cigars. Spanish cedar lining is non-negotiable.
